According to recent Census data and SAALT, over 4.3 million South Asians live in the United States. The South Asian community in the United States is made up of individuals with ancestry from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives.
In the state of Illinois, South Asian Americans are one of the fastest growing groups in Illinois. However, the community’s influence on elections has not increased at the same rate as its population. South Asian Americans represent about 2% of the overall state population, with high concentrations in particular districts. Over the last 16 years, Illinois’ South Asian population has grown by over 55%, but this growth has not been represented in the when it comes to civic engagement
