Our 2017 Keynote Speaker: Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal
Born in Chennai and with her parents still residing in India, Congresswoman Jayapal is the first ever South Asian American Women elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and has spent the last 20 years working internationally and domestically as a leading advocate for women’s, immigrant, civil, and human rights. She came to the United States by herself at the age of 16 to attend college at Georgetown University and later received her MBA from Northwestern University right here in Evanston, Illinois. During her years at business school, she became interested in applying her business skills for social good, working on economic development issues in South Chicago. She has worked in a number of industries in both the public and private sector. In May 2013, Jayapal was recognized by President Obama as a White House “Champion of Change.” Since joining Congress this past January, she’s quickly become a strong progressive voice in Washington DC. She is also a proud representative of our growing South Asian American Community and spoken openly about how her life as an Indian immigrant was instrumental in molding her political career and success.
